In the world of maintenance and reliability engineering we have a fundamental problem. I would call this a marketing problem and it manifests itself in ways obvious in many companies.
The problem is formulating a clear answer to thef ollowing questions: which problem are we solving? And why should uppermanagement care? 💸
Many factors are cited as the reason for this; it’s the culture, it’s ours ystems, it’s because we don’t have enough data. And you can probably add a few more.
One key element that is often missing in the discussion is that we lack model based insight into the systems we are trying to keep up and running. Industry is trying to get less dependent on knowledge inside people’s head and rely more on data driven decisions instead. 📈
But we seldom start with describing the failure process of our equipment in simple physical phenomena. We keep on looking for that needle (the signal) in the haystack of noise that is our data, but we won't find it. 📡
